PAUL HULSEY DELIVERS WELCOMING ADDRESS FOR 2008 CHEFS’ FEAST
On February 24, 2008, Paul Hulsey, Honorary Chairman of the Lowcountry Food Bank’s Annual Chefs’ Feast,
delivered the welcoming remarks for the 2008 fundraiser which was attended by over 900 people. This year, Hulsey Law
Group has agreed to underwrite the Kids Cafe Program which provides nutritious food for children who would otherwise go to
school hungry. In presenting his opening remarks, Paul Hulsey pledged that he and partner Cherie Durand will
sponsor that program for the next ten years.
In his opening remarks, Paul said:
“I am proud to welcome you tonight and to have served as the Honorary Chairman for this year’s event. Last
year, my law partner,Cerie Duand, and I made a special commitment to this event and this year we have reaffirmed our commitment
by undertaking the new sponsorship of the Kids Café Program. We will do this every year hereafter.
Tonight, as kindred spirits, we all celebrate our commitment to win the war on hunger. To see that no mother suffers
the pain of sending her child to school without a full stomach, to insure that every family in the Lowcountry who is hungry is fed.
To win the war on hunger, it does not take a large commitment from everyone, it just takes everyone to make a commitment.”
Chefs’ Feast was an overwhelming success, raising over $200,000 to feed the hungry people in the Lowcountry.
The Lowcountry Food Bank launched its first sponsored Kids Cafe program in 2000 in order to significantly impact childhood hunger in
coastal South Carolina. Kids Cafe is an after school program that provides low-income students with hot, healthy meals and academic
assistance. The Lowcountry Food Bank currently operates 15 Kids Cafe sites in coastal South Carolina. In 2007, the Lowcountry Food Bank
provided more than 104,661 hot, nutritious meals or nearly 134,000 pounds of food through this program.
The mission of the Lowcountry Food Bank is to feed the poor and hungry of the ten coastal counties of South Carolina by soliciting and
distributing healthy food and grocery products to nonprofit agencies serving the poor, and to educate the public about the problems of
and solutions to domestic hunger. The Lowcountry Food Bank was founded in 1983 as a clearinghouse for donated food items through the
generosity of both the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina and the Trident United Way.
The Lowcountry Food Bank collects, inspects, maintains, and distributes otherwise wasted food products from manufacturers, food distributors,
the government, supermarkets, wholesalers along with farmers to redistribute these food products to a grassroots network of 416 member
agencies providing hunger-relief services.
The Lowcountry Food Bank also offers resources such as nutrition education, safe food handling practices, and maintenance information. The
Lowcountry Food Bank is a member of America's Second Harvest, the nation's official network of food bank's.
