Hulsey Law Group partner Paul Hulsey believes “Success carries with it the responsibility of helping those less fortunate.” All members of the firm enthusiastically support this view. Charitable giving is a cornerstone of the Hulsey Law Group philosophy: Placing the Client and Community first.

As all Charleston law firms do, we maintain our good standing as members of the legal community in which we practice. We recognize an additional responsibility as citizens of the community in which we live. Each and every one of us at Hulsey Law Group is committed to supporting the needy and less fortunate by giving something back through community service and support of our local charities.

To emphasize our commitment to the community, we have chosen Interfaith Crisis Ministries as our “Spiritual Partner” to share with us in our success. The decision of any business organization to participate in the community through community service and charitable contributions is one of individual choice and resources.

By including this Community Development page, we hope that other law firms and businesses in the Charleston community might take up the challenge.

IT IS WORKING
"Dear Mr. Hulsey: ... I want to thank you for your generous gift this past year. I can think of no better way to help local people truly in the abyss. You're saving lives and enabling people in deep trouble to re-enter the World. With you generous gifts, Crisis Ministries can help restore hope in many lives. Obviously, you know this. ...You have inspired me to make a $50,000 (largely anonymous) gift in conjunction with the beginning of the capital campaign. Your leadership is certainly paying dividends in this case."

HULSEY LAW GROUP PRESENTING SPONSOR FOR FOOD, SHELTER, HOPE
Hulsey Law Group demonstrated its continuing support for the Interfaith Crisis Ministries by serving as a presenting sponsor for the annual Food, Shelter, Hope fundraiser held at the Charleston Maritime Center on Thursday, April 24, 2008.

“Crisis Ministries holds a special place in my heart,” said Hulsey Law Group principal Paul Hulsey.  “I have supported the work of this important charity for more than a decade now.  There is nothing more critical to one’s independence than having a roof of your own over your head.  Last year alone, Crisis Ministries placed over 320 homeless people in permanent housing.  The financial support we contribute annually to Crisis Ministries is a small price to pay for giving hope to homeless people in the Lowcountry.”

The mission of Crisis Ministries is to provide food, shelter and hope to end homelessness and hunger one person at a time, one family at a time.  Crisis Ministries provides social services, primary and mental healthcare and counseling in addition to the basic needs of food and shelter to over 150 homeless men, women and children every night.   The ultimate goal is helping individuals to live self-sufficiently, with dignity.  Last year, they helped over 320 people get back on their feet and served over 190,000 meals to those in need.

HULSEY LAW GROUP MATCHES DONATION FOR KIDS CAFÉ
On February 25, 2007, the Eighth Annual Chefs’ Feast fundraiser was held in support of the Kids Café Program of the Lowcountry Food Bank. The funds raised at this event help fight childhood hunger in the Lowcountry. The Kids Café program is an innovative after-school program that provides hot, nutritious meals and academic assistance to nearly 1,000 low-income children each week. Hulsey Law Group again served as an Event Sponsor for the Chefs’ Feast fundraiser. At the end of the evening, the final proceeds were tallied at $110,000. Paul Hulsey then surprised Lowcountry Food Bank Executive Director D. Jermaine Husser with his announcement that he would match the original $110,000, bringing the total raised to $220,000, the most amount ever raised at the event.

"Hunger and malnutrition strike one in four children in the Lowcountry and I am proud to make this contribution toward bringing food and nourishment to the underprivileged children of our community. I believe that success carries with it the obligation to help others less fortunate. I am proud to have this opportunity to help feed the needy children in the Lowcountry," Paul Hulsey stated.

The mission of the Lowcountry Food Bank is to feed the poor and hungry of the ten coastal counties of South Carolina by soliciting and distributing healthy food and grocery products to nonprofit agencies serving the poor, and to educate the public about the problems of and solutions to domestic hunger. The Lowcountry Food Bank was founded in 1983 as a clearinghouse for donated food items through the generosity of both Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina and Trident United Way.

The theme of Mr. Hulsey’s address was “The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes.”

"With all the wealth and abundance in this nation, I am amazed that we cannot feed the people of our country. It is incumbent upon our business community to recognize that hunger exists and to take steps to make defeating hunger in the Lowcountry part of our business plans," Paul Hulsey declared.

HULSEY LAW GROUP SPONSORS SPECIAL OLYMPICS
Hulsey Law Group served as a gold sponsor for the annual fundraiser for the Special Olympics of South Carolina on October 21, 2006. The event included a silent auction, live auction and dinner reception to raise funds for the operation of Special Olympics South Carolina for the coming year. In addition to sponsoring the event, partners Paul Hulsey and Cherie Durand made a cash donation at the live auction sufficient to sponsor 50 Special Olympians for next year.

“The auctioneer began by asking for someone to sponsor five, but we figured why just five,” Cherie Durand explained. “Let’s do it in a big way, so we jumped in and made it 50. They said it was a new record and we were proud to do it.”

Hulsey Law Group was also successful in making the winning bid in the silent auction for the featured oil painting by Special Olympian Eddie Gregory.

“When I first saw Eddie’s painting, I knew it belonged in a special place in our office. It is a beautiful example of the talent of Special Olympians in South Carolina,” Paul Hulsey said.

Eddie Gregory made a special trip to Hulsey Law Group to visit the employees and help hang his picture. Eddie said, “I am a spokesperson for South Carolina Special Olympics and want to thank Paul and Cherie and all the firm for their support. I am proud to have my picture hanging in your office.”

Special Olympics’ Director Paula Byers accompanied Eddie to the office and also expressed her thanks to the firm for its continued support for Charleston charities.

Managing partner Cherie Durand said, “It is important for the local business community to support causes such as the Special Olympics. We are proud to have been a primary sponsor of this event and will continue as we have in the past to help others not so fortunate.”

Special Olympics changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities. Through year-round sports training and athletic competition and other related programming for more than 15,500 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in South Carolina, Special Olympics has created a model community that celebrates people’s diverse gifts. During the school year, Hulsey Law Group sponsors their after-school soccer team as well as providing other assistance as needed.

Cherie Durand, who served as a translator for Diane Sawyer and who taught school in Latin America, noted, “These children remind me so much of the children I taught in Ecuador. They are so bright and eager to learn.”

HLG DONATES VAN TO RUAL MISSION
In response to calls for help, Hulsey Law Group donated recently a new minivan and $10,000 to Rural Mission, Inc. Rural Mission is an ecumenical, nonprofit organization that has served economically disadvantaged families on Johns, Wadmalaw, Yonge’s, and Edisto Islands, as well as the Hollywood area. Rural Mission also provides a federally funded Head Start program from children of migrant workers, as well as crisis assistance and intervention, home repair, and construction, advocacy and counseling. Executive Director Linda Gadson noted that without the donation, Rural Mission faced closure. “We didn’t know how we were going to make it,” she said. The law firm decided to donate the van after learning that Rural Mission’s van was out of commission.

“I believe that with success comes the responsibility of helping others not so fortunate,” law firm founder Paul Hulsey explained. “Rural Mission does so much for the Charleston community and it’s important for other law firms and businesses to step up to the plate. I hope that our gift will lead others to do the same.”

FAMILY RECOVERY COURT
Responding to The Charleston County Family Recovery Court’s need for funding in order to continue its day to day operations, HLG continues to uphold its commitment to community service by donating $10,000 to the Court.

Tied to the local Family Court, and supervised by Charleston County Family Court Judge Paul W. Garfinkle, the Family Recovery Court seeks to change the process by which families are reunited. In a traditional family court system, months pass between hearings, and cases can drag on for years, while parents try to get clean and turn their lives around in order to regain custody of their children. These displaced children spend long years in foster care or group homes.

The Family Recovery Court tries to rehabilitate parents and reunite families torn apart by alcohol and drug abuse by settling cases quickly, usually within 12 months. Participants are required to show up for court once a week, attending counseling and AA, and are subjected to random drug testing every day. Failure to follow the rules leads to serious consequences, including expulsion from the program and jail time. Successful participants are reunited with their children.

Partners Paul Hulsey and Cherie Durand want to encourage the local legal community to continue to support this innovative program, and have agreed to match dollar for dollar any donations made by attorneys, up to an additional $10,000. Please help this program hold parents accountable, and provide their children with loving, permanent homes.
